Zaire Essays - Zaire, Mobutu Sese Seko,

Zaire The circumstance in Zaire (today The Democratic Republic of Congo) under the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko is a decent delineation of an African catastrophe. A country so wealthy in national assets ? having the absolute biggest precious stone mines in the world ? bound for progress and development, becomes casualty to one of the most noticeably terrible executives (on the off chance that you can even consider him that) of the twentieth century and one of the best ?defilement craftsman? ever. Debasement inundated the youthful country soon after autonomy and it hasn't seen light from that point onward. In a time when Asian nations, Central American nations, and South American nations are making radiant progress towards improvement, a dictator criminal who exemplifies everything malicious, sets one of Africa's principle prospects backward. This was the circumstance in Zaire that we will take a gander at today and look at. We will concentrate on the nation of Zaire (1965 ? 1997), which was Mobutu's. Mobutu has been toppled as of May 16, 1997 and the nation renamed The Democratic republic of Congo. The Oxford American Dictionary characterizes a ?State? as, ?an sorted out network under one government.? Zaire was definitely not sorted out, anything besides a network, and had anything other than a legislature. To legitimize the guarantee that Zaire is a decent representation of a ?bombed state,? we will appear a few models that help this announcement. Models and representation incorporate Mobutu's acknowledgment of pay-offs from remote governments, abuse of government spending plan, misappropriation of fare profit, preoccupation of outside guide and credits, a bombed Treasury, a bombed Central Bank, a profoundly brought together government, incessant wide-spread lease chasing, an absence of long haul arranging, no political turn of events what's more, strength, close to farming disappointment, nepotism, terrible ventures, powerlessness to reimburse national obligation, human administrations disappointment, and generally government disappointment. These supporters of this ?bombed state? are an immediate consequence of defilement. ?Debasement effectsly affects monetary turn of events. It diminishes the proficiency of the common assistance and its capacity to detail and actualize government improvement strategies, and it ransacks the nation of immense totals of remote trade required for speculation? (George Ayittey 262). In other words, debasement puts a ?stranglehold on the monetary and political switches of powers? (Kempe Ronald Hope Sr. 90-91), in this way making it for all intents and purposes unthinkable for a legislature to work.

How Will Peak Oil Change The World Essay example - 576 Words

How Will Peak Oil Change The World? Peak oil is one of the world’s largest problems but it is one that many do not even know about. Oil is used by nearly everyone just about everywhere in the world. So what if the supply of oil began to diminish? That’s exactly what peak oil is. When an oil well is created, those that are extracting the oil will begin to extract more and more until the amount of oil produced peaks. Once the oil well peaks, those that are extracting the oil will begin to slowly obtain less and less oil over the years. Running out of oil in the world is not the main problem because â€Å"the existing reservoirs may not be capable of producing on a daily basis the increasing volumes of oil that the world requires because it would†¦show more content†¦Oil production did indeed peak a year later† (DeFotis). There is not a sure way of telling if the world has peaked or not but there are major consequences. Over the years, just about every region in the world has peaked besides the Middle East and â€Å"of the 65 largest oil producing countries in the world, up to 54 have passed their peak of production and are now in decline, including the United States in 1970, Indonesia in 1997, Australia in 2000, the UK in 1999, Norway in 2001, and Mexico in 2004† (Peak Oil Primer). With this in mind, how much of a decline will there be in the future? A decline of â€Å"10% or more would soon implode the global economy but most models project decline rates of 2-4%†(Peak Oil Primer). Answer: Introduction: In this modern and competitive world, it is very much important for each and every Government to increase or enhance the overall productivity or efficiency of each city so to grow the entire economy in all categories possible such as employment rate, technology advancement, etc. Also, to attract both tourists and individual all around the globe, every city must be comprised of a different monument and incredible parks based on various historical or special events. Thus, the following study would provide detail information about urban architecture, urban space, and urban design by taking London city as a base and would also frame a summarized conclusion towards the end of the study. As we all know that London is considered as one of the most powerful and beautiful city of United Kingdom, the following study would present the total strength and weakness of the same and define the overall concept of urban design. Also, since there are different perspectives towards urban architecture, u rban design, and space each of such perspective would be taken into account with the help of supportive evidence and accurate statements. Moreover, different other points would also be presented which have been acquired by me after going through several online and offline sites or source of information. Moreover, the ultimate aim of this study is to draw the attention of all the leaders and that of an individual in the city towards the importance, requirement and fundamental acceptability of urbanism and why the same should be given appropriate priority at regular intervals. Thus, the following study would include all the parameters relevant to discuss the entire concept of urbanism of United Kingdom with the help of London city. Urban Architecture: To define the urban architecture of United Kingdom by taking London city as a base, it is very much necessary to understand the actual definition, importance, and requirement of the same(Ellin, 2016). The overall concept of urban architecture defines the pattern of structuring towns, cities and villages of United Kingdom and is responsible for their respective position in this world. With the help of urban architecture, the overall classification of characteristics present in each and every city such as urban places, buildings, etc. is done or performed. Also by reviewing the urban structure of both modern and ancient times, one would be able to locate both positive and negative changes on the same. Thus, the following sub-heads would define the overall position of urban architecture of United Kingdom by defining the different characteristics of London in a productive way: Historical overview of London: It is not to be mentioned that London is considered as one of the most powerful and advanced cities of United Kingdom and are way ahead in many cities around the globe. However, it is even more important to define the areas which are considered as relevant to this successful advancement of this town. Elaborating more about the same, before determining the matters important for development, it is very much necessary to understand the basic overview of the city (Ellin, 2016). This city is considered as the capital, England, and the United Kingdom from more than 2000 years before. Also, it is considered as one of the most important financial and cultural capitals around the globe because of its expansion towards civil war, aerial bombardment, etc. Talking about the current situation of the city, and then the same is considered as one of the primary financial districts and also symbolizes a minor portion of the entire metropolis present in Greater London. Thus, the name of London is deri ved from Londinium, which was established as a commercial center in the first century in Roman Britain. Moreover, this city was founded by Brutus of Troy in 1000-1100 B.C(Forest, 2016). Georgian era of London: To define the overall concept of urbanism, it is very much necessary to determine the Georgian ear of the city as the same is considered as the first step which states the overall characteristics of people, a language of a country. Elaborating more about the same, Queen Victoria was the last Hanoverian of United Kingdom, which gives birth to the historical era of Victorian(Gandhi, 2012). The overall concept of Georgian period is distributed into many categories such as arts, social or religious, empire, etc. which is presented below: Arts: The reason for the high or powerful personality of London city in the field of arts is the contribution from well-known writers such as Mary Shelley, Henry Fielding and Jane Austen, etc. The overall presentations of these authors were characterized by Robert Adam, John Nash architecture and were related to Gothic Revival Style. The authors of United Kingdom were very much efficient and productive towards Romantic Poets, such as William Wordsworth, William Blake and John Keats. Thus, from above one can easily understand the strength of United Kingdom towards producing useful arts in almost all the categories(Gosling and Maitland, 2014). Social and Religious Change: This category also holds very much importance towards shaping the entire urbanism of the country as it presents the actual relationship between social or religious change and overall development of the country. Elaborating more about the same, with the introduction of the industrial revolution which gives birth to the procedure of rising class divisions there were massive changes in the overall structure of the United Kingdom social and religious departments. Also, the rural areas were very much affected because of agricultural revolution when it comes to small communities and flexibility of people. Since there are two sides of a coin, even though a majority of this changes contributes towards the development of the country but at the same time gives birth to many social ills and issues which were finally characterized by qualified writers such as Hannah More, Thomas Coram, etc.(Irazbal, 2012). Thus, the overall structure of Georgian architecture of United Kingdom depends very much o n this category and still needs development in many cities of it primarily in London. Empire: It is not to be mentioned that the total period of Georgian era can also be considered as the expansion of British movement throughout the world. In this period, a lot of war has been taken place including Seven Years War which is also known as Indian and French War, American Revolutionary War, etc. The ultimate result of the enhancement of empire was totally related to explorers and statesmanlike Captain Cook, Clive of India, etc. Thus, summarizing the comprehensive study of Georgian era of United Kingdom, one can readily understand the strength and weakness of the country such as arts and social ills. However, the position of London city is still better than many other cities with the same status and populations. However, the overall boundary of urban architecture still needs to be improved, and appropriate Government should take the responsibility of the same(King, 2015). Empire Source:https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=empirebiw=1366bih=667source=lnmstbm=ischsa=Xved=0ahUKEwi_r5OXi6nLAhVRCY4KHcSqDSEQ_AUICCgD#tbm=ischq=empire+palaceimgdii=DsibDPL2jNPq4M%3A%3BDsibDPL2jNPq4M%3A%3Bsdx51x-_57ExBM%3Aimgrc=DsibDPL2jNPq4M%3A Critical perspective on urbanism: To present the critical perspective on urbanism, it is very much necessary to understand the requirement, importance and fundamental acceptability of the same. Urbanism defines the needs of a country which would increase the overall efficiency and productivity of the same. Through urbanism, each and every Government would be able to structure the towns, villages and cities of the country in an appropriate way and would also be able to increase or enhance the overall economy status. To describe the urbanism in a single word then, the same can be considered as development or improvement. Relating the same with our subject matter, and then the overall position of United Kingdom as far as urban planning and needs of societies are considered is much better and way ahead of many other countries running with the same population and with the same use of ingredients or technology (Parham, 2011).Through critical aspect, one would be able to know both positive and negative impact of the same.Fo llowing is the list of points on which key aspects have been derived from significant sources: List of characteristics procedure of Life of various city occupants Overall information of physical requirements of different urban societies present in city or country as a whole Planning for city development, improvement and up gradation Street Trade in Victorian times of London was not formal: The above statement is considered as one of the most critical perspectives of urbanism as there was much evidence which shows that the street trades in Victorian times were informal or were not appropriate and thus declining the overall development and economy of the country. Since use and introduction of technology in Victorian times were very less, it is somewhere quite evident that the overall condition of a street would not be appropriate. However, it is the responsibility of the Government to take the responsibility within the appropriate time and fulfills all the requirements to gain the satisfaction of individuals. Now elaborating about the capital city of United Kingdom which is London, the condition were no different when compares to that of other cities comprises in the same country(Rockcastle, 2015). The overall impact of the same reduces the level of productivity and efficiency of London town and thus diminishes the entire level of urban architecture. Moreover, in Victori an times, this country use to run with human bridges and related merchandise for many years or decades. Relationship between Victorian and Dharavi Slums: To provide complete information about Victorian and Dharavi Slums, it is very much necessary to understand the actual meaning and effect of the same. Slums are considered as larger urban areas with informal management consisting of substandard housing and squalor. Relating the same with the current subject matter, following is the list of Victorian Slums which were present in many cities of United Kingdom including its capital city (Rockcastle, 2015). Slums in East London: The East London of United Kingdom is also characterized by Darkest London because of the presence of endless slums in this area. Following is the list of slums which are present towards the areas of east London: Whitechapel: This area is considered as a hub and located towards the Victorian east end. Even though the area was well maintained up to 17th century but from the beginning of 18th century the city started considered as overcrowded and crime infected. Spitalfileds: This area was introduced by St. Marys Spittel and was inhabited by famous Huguenot but in the later part of 19th century, the same started considered as crime infected because of the introduction of Manchester textile factories (Samalavicius, 2013). Bethnal Green: Formerly this place comprised of small-scale manufacturing industries and working class people, but in the later part of the 19th century, this place started overcrowded and often filled with slums. Apart from above three areas, there are many other fields present in the east London, which is comprised of vast slums such as The old Nichol, Slum exploration literature and Slumming. Also, not only in East London but the presence of slums is also located in many other parts of London such as St. Giles and Clerkenwell, Jacobs Island etc(Scully, 2010). Thus, from above one can easily understand that there are a lot of areas which still requires a huge amount of attention and interest from the Government and appropriate authorities of United Kingdom. All the areas present above can be considered as the loopholes in the overall structure of urban architecture and urban design. Bethnal Green Source: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=empirebiw=1366bih=667source=lnmstbm=ischsa=Xved=0ahUKEwi_r5OXi6nLAhVRCY4KHcSqDSEQ_AUICCgD#tbm=ischq=structure+of+urban+architecture+and+urban+designimgrc=inN3oFGIV5r6wM%3A Dharavi Slums: These slums are present inside many states of West Bengal and are commonly found in the state of Maharashtra and the city of Mumbai.Dharavi is a locality present in Mumbai and was started in the year 1882. The main reason behind the development and up gradation of this slum is the expansion or expulsion of many factories and residents by colonial Government. The primary cause behind including this while framing the urban architecture of United Kingdom is the relation of import and export between Maharashtra and many other countries of the world. Thus, it is the responsibility of the respective Governments to take the significant responsibility and avoid the economy issues coming in the form of export from many other Indian countries or cities (Scully, 2010). Image of the city: Image of the city plays a very vital role while review the urban architecture of any country including the United Kingdom to calculate the real position of the city comprises in a country. The above heading is a book which was written by Kevin Lynch in 1960s. This book addresses all the requirements such as places, buildings, monuments and is considered to be very precise while structuring the overall concept of urban architecture. With the help of this book, it would become very easy for the Governments to structure the city planning as it provides all the details of the urban environment. One of the most important points which were stated by Kevin Lynch in this book is the continuous alteration in urbanism which would ultimately change the entire prospectus of a country, and that of every city comprises in it (Talen, 2012). Moreover, the author also presented four main concepts for urban planning such as: Legible Definite Sensory Cues Picture has to be perceived Manipulated by planners of city Talking about the current condition of United Kingdom, even though the Government and respected authorizers have paid attention towards the points indicated in this book while structuring the city planning there are many loopholes which still lots of care and improvement. Overall the performance is satisfactory but not great considering the status of other countries in the world. The above term came to light in the later part of the 19th century where the development of cities started recognizing as principal cities. The primary objective of principal cities is to draw the attention towards the social realities and include the same while structuring the overall format of urban and city planning. Thus, relating the same to our current subject matter, the overall performance and position of the same are efficient enough to call the cities as organic and with less social ills (Trudeau, 2013). The government of United Kingdom is productive sufficiently to deal with the list of social realities and ensure healthy environment around the country. However, various slums towards the eastern side of London still need improvement and attention. City of Flows: As stated in the name, since flows stand for movement of anything from one place to another, cities of flows symbolizes the movement of people from one location to another due to urbanism related reasons. The higher the scores of flows, the lower will be the urban architecture of the country. Describing the same with our subject matter, individuals living in London are moving out of the city very frequently and thus becoming a major concern for the respective Government. To increase or enhance the overall economy of the country, it is very much important or rather necessary for the Government to understand the problems of individuals and lower down the city flow rate as early as possible (Trudeau, 2013). City of Flows Source:https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=empirebiw=1366bih=667source=lnmstbm=ischsa=Xved=0ahUKEwi_r5OXi6nLAhVRCY4KHcSqDSEQ_AUICCgD#tbm=ischq=city+of+flowsimgrc=ip0KoQ0wVS3ZIM%3A City of Appropriation: This is just the opposite of city of flows as appropriation stands for the loyalty of individuals towards the city and continuous development of the city and that of a country in several departments. It is not to be mentioned that the results are just opposite to that of a town of flows and working on the same would gradually increase the overall position of the country in this department as well (Talen, 2012). However, there are still many areas where the location of this city is quite attractive such as technologies, educational institutes, employment rate, etc. Interventions in London Urban Places: To describe the relevant interventions, it is very much necessary to understand the importance, requirement and fundamental meaning of the same. Urban Interventions is considered as a title which is diverted to many art practices mainly related to social community, public places, and robust built. Relating the same with the subject matter, there were many urban interventions in London in the field of art practices, public areas, scientific materials, etc. Thus, through this category, London city contributes towards the level of Urbanism of United Kingdom in a positive way (Talen, 2012). Buildings in London: As stated above as well, since London is counted under one of those cities which is very much advance when it comes to technology and advancements, it is quite evident that the buildings of this town are very precise and well built. The majority of the buildings present in this city is in perfect shape and adds attractiveness towards the country in a positive way. Moreover, both commercial and personal buildings in this town are built after considering all the points relevant to structuring and with proper use of technology (Scully, 2010). Buildings in London Source:https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=empirebiw=1366bih=667source=lnmstbm=ischsa=Xved=0ahUKEwi_r5OXi6nLAhVRCY4KHcSqDSEQ_AUICCgD#tbm=ischq=Buildings+in+Londonimgrc=NDp1AruXsspJZM%3A Future of city: After considering all the above points and the overall performance of the city towards several departments, it is quite obvious that these cities has all the aspects of viewing as a capital, United Kingdom and fulfill a majority of the requirements related to urban planning, city planning, urban design and urban architecture. However, it is the responsibility of the Government to pay an appropriate amount of attention towards all the loopholes present in different departments such as social ills, increasing slums of East London, an impact of social and religious realities, etc. Also, it is the responsibility of the financial and non-financial ministers of the country to consider the issues or problems of individuals and dissolve the reason behind their movement from London to any other place rapidly (Sease, 2014).Thus, the future of this city is looking quite promising if properly care or maintained in the upcoming years by the leaders of the country. Areas require attention: Since the ultimate aim of this study is to draw the attention of leaders running the country and that of other related professionals towards the importance of implementing nice city and urban planning, it would become even easier for them just to check the areas their country lacks and improve the same. Thus, following is the list of areas which needs to be improved for better tomorrow of United Kingdom: Presence of social ills Huge Presence of Slums towards East London Lack of structure on the basis of image of city Negative impact of other country such as India while exporting or importing goods Decreasing the Level of City of flows with adverse impact towards city of appropriation However, it is the responsibility of the Government to pay equivalent amount of attention towards other departments as well to secure the level of urban architecture of the country. Areas require attention Source:https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=empirebiw=1366bih=667source=lnmstbm=ischsa=Xved=0ahUKEwi_r5OXi6nLAhVRCY4KHcSqDSEQ_AUICCgD#tbm=ischq=Buildings+in+London+Areas+require+attentionimgdii=v_5nBqmm96qH9M%3A%3Bv_5nBqmm96qH9M%3A%3B_ADXKqzzfcj7EM%3Aimgrc=v_5nBqmm96qH9M%3A Urban Space: After going through the entire information and detail about urban architecture, it is very much necessary to understand the importance, requirement and fundamental acceptability of urban space to define the overall concept of urbanism of United Kingdom. The overall concept of urban space is comprised of cultural and natural resources and is characterized by unfamiliar place or open parks (Sease, 2014). With the help of urban space, the overall level of green or eco-friendly environment of a country and that of city increases or enhances and make the environment healthy for the individuals. Following is list of urban space present in the city of London of United Kingdom: Phoenix Garden Covent Garden Outdoor London Theatre Land Apart from other four, there is much another urban space present as well towards the central and eastern part of London. Thus, to remain secure from global warming, it is the responsibility of the Government to increase or enhance the numbers of urban space in the coming period as well (Samalavicius, 2013).The overall importance of urban space is never ending; it helps in maintaining the overall physical conditions of the individuals and enhances the overall economy of the country. Urban Space Source:https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=empirebiw=1366bih=667source=lnmstbm=ischsa=Xved=0ahUKEwi_r5OXi6nLAhVRCY4KHcSqDSEQ_AUICCgD#tbm=ischq=Urban+Spaceimgrc=QF6y-No0chRbhM%3A Urban Design: The last but not the least important element which needs to be considered to define the actual urban architecture of any country is urban design. This design provides all the information related to the structure of buildings, urban planning, and needs of individual along with an overall economy status of the country. The overall concept of urban design can also be considered as a procedure of structuring and finishing cities, villages, and towns. Thus, it is very much important or rather necessary for each and every Government to pay appropriate attention towards the factors of urban design and improve the overall condition of the country (Balshaw and Kennedy, 2010). One should not forget that the boundary of urban design works on a much bigger scale than that of other scales which works on individual building and places. Relating the same with our subject matter, Following is the list of iconic places which are present in the streets of London and contributes towards the attractiven ess and specialty of United Kingdom: British Museum National Gallery Tate Modern National History Museum Coca-Cola London Eye Museum of Science Museum of Victoria and Albert London Tower Royal Museum Greenwich Madame Tussauds London The above list clearly states that this city is very much efficient towards performing urban designing and has great places to build a good economical position in the world and attract tourist all around the globe. However it is the responsibility of the Government to take the appropriate responsibility of all these places and provide adequate financial and non-financial resources to maintain the same in a productive way(Krier, 2010). Moreover, the main reason for considering urban design to structure the monuments mentioned above is because of the fact that urban design uses all those elements which are built by much environment profession such as urban planning, landscape architecture etc. Even though the performance of London city or the country as a whole is quite pleasing, still there are many areas which require proper attention and care from the leaders of the country. Thus, it is the responsibility of the Government to turn the urban design theory into practice and become effi cient in the same. Through this way, the overall level of urban architecture would be increased or enhanced (Krier, 2010). Urban Design Source: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=empirebiw=1366bih=667source=lnmstbm=ischsa=Xved=0ahUKEwi_r5OXi6nLAhVRCY4KHcSqDSEQ_AUICCgD#tbm=ischq=urban+designimgrc=s5coTgHmhS8eEM%3A Conclusion: To summarize the above study in a compact manner, one can say that the overall structure of London city is equivalent to 80 percent of urban architecture, urban space, and urban design as stated by many leaders in both ancient and modern period. There are many areas where this city remains on top for many years such as technology advancement, maintaining urban space, etc. whereas on the other side social ills and slums are increasing every day causing serious problems or injuries to many individuals. Moreover, it is the responsibility of the Government to solve both major and minor issues from the base and maintain a smooth flow of operation around the city or that of respective country (McQuire, 2012).

The All-Important First Impression

The All-Important First Impression If youre looking for a job, youre also looking for an interview, and the path to that interview is strewn with discarded resumes and cover letters. Why? A resume and cover letter present a first impression – the all-important first impression that will determine whether you are considered for further inspection by your potential employer.AppearanceJust as you would be clean, neat and well-groomed for your personal interview, so should your resume/cover letter. Choose stationery carefully; your local office supply or quick-print shop can help. Bright white is always a good choice, but consider pale gray or off-white as these are professional-looking and may help your papers stand out from the rest in the pile.Cover letter layoutIf you dont have your own letterhead (most of us dont) and youre experienced with creative software (Adobe Illustrator, for example), you could create your own logo to position at the top of your letterhead. Caution: this has the potential to do more har m than good if you have no design skills. Use block style layout, which means everything on the page will be flush left, leaving a margin of 1-1.5 on the left and 1 on the other edges. Single-space your letter, leaving a double space between date line and address; between address and salutation; between salutation and first paragraph; between all paragraphs; and between last paragraph and closing. Leave at least four spaces for your signature between the closing and your name.ResearchBefore you blindly send out resumes, do some research on your potential employers to determine where your information should be sent. Use the Internet, the telephone, the library or someone who already works at the company to glean everything you can about the job you seek, the company and the hiring decision-maker. If you are applying for a job in the marketing department, you dont want your resume to end up in the accounting department, so whenever possible, get the name and title of the person who sh ould receive your resume, and make sure the mailing address is correct.Cover letter contentYou now have your stationery and know where to send your plea for employment. What do you include in your cover letter? The most difficult part about writing your cover letter is what NOT to include. Dont rehash your resume; dont gush about the company; dont write more than one page; dont use slang or off-color humor or anything that might offend the reader; and above all, dont lie.Since the cover letter is really the first thing your reader will see, you should spend more time with it than with your resume, which is basically just a list of facts and experience. Start with a proper salutation; if youve managed to get the name of the person, thats great. If not, address your letter to the Manager of the department that has the job opening, or to the Human Resources Director or to the department or title discovered in your research. The first paragraph is crucial. This is equivalent to your pers onal appearance when you walk through the door for your interview. Whatever you write afterward, do not begin this paragraph with I. Try to make some true comment about the company (Since ABC Company has a reputation for marketing excellence, your opening for a Marketing Assistant immediately sparked my interest.). If you talked to someone on the telephone about the job, reference that (Thank you for taking the time yesterday to explain ABC Companys need for a Marketing Assistant.). In other words, concentrate on the company where you want to work rather than yourself. In the following paragraphs, explain why you are a good candidate for the job. Leave the specific position descriptions for the resume, but focus on personal attributes (detailed, energetic, sense of humor), similar job or school experience (awarded Marketer of the Year at ABC College, created several successful advertising campaigns while interning at XYZ Agency) and why you would be the best choice for ABC Company (e xcited about the opportunity and potential for growth, believe you can contribute to ABCs success). A total of three-four paragraphs is plenty; do NOT overwrite this letter. Your sole purpose is to guide your reader to your resume. The resumeIf your resume is more than two pages, youve lost your reader. Begin with a SHORT statement of your objective – you want to expand your skills, be part of a company where you can grow a career, etc. Then list your work history in chronological order, starting with the most recent. Do not list jobs more than 10 years in the past; with rapid advancement in technology and a fast learning curve in most industries, any experience you gained that long ago is not relevant. Do not list short-term jobs (less than six months) unless they were internships as you dont want to appear to be a job-hopper. Do not over-explain each position; concentrate more on the jobs that have direct relevance to the job you seek. The next element after your job history should be your education. List your academic degrees, universities and dates of attendance. You could also list any awards or special honors you received. Information about your high school should be included ONLY if you have just graduated and are applying for your first job.If applicable, you can include specific skills as a separate item, such as computer software or hardware.Although some applicants offer references upon request, I suggest you include three business references with your resume. Name, title, company, phone number and/or email address are sufficient for contact information.Thats all there is to it! Just remember that your cover letter and resume should be:easy to readinterestingwell-written and grammatically correctfactualGood luck!

African americans in sports Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

African americans in sports - Research Paper Example 42-43). Too often, however, sport does not provide social mobility and lucrative careers for African American. Background Debate involving whether or not the sport domain in the United States is benefiting or exploiting its African American participants continues to be an issue of critical concern. Specifically, as the discussion relates to the impact of the athletic experience upon the progress of young, African American student- athletes. Embedded within this discussion exist two opposing perspectives which view sport as either "the embodiment of the American dream of meritocracy and success" (Sammons, 1994, p. 215) or as an institution designed to operate as a form of social control. According to sport sociologist George H. Sage (2000) the fundamental difference regarding these arguments and in how sport has historically been understood lies in whether one considers sport a cultural practice or not. Sage (2000) offers a logical and rational argument for considering larger socio-hi storical context when examining sport issues. He maintains that sport is a cultural practice that cannot be fully understood "as a practice isolated from the social, economic, political, and cultural context in which it is situated" (In Brooks & Althouse, p. 2). The divergence in opinion regarding the utility of sport, as expressed by the African American community, has dated as far back as slavery (Wiggins & Miller 433). The sentiments of ex- slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass on this subject have been noted by historian Jeffrey Sammons: From his retrospective position as ex-slave, Douglass considered sport and oppressive instrument and divisionary device to occupy the minds and energies of slaves, thus preventing them from pursuing more useful activities and fully appreciating their horrible plight (p. 216). Cautiousness about the current role of sport in the lives of the African American community continues to be voiced mainly through the limited amount of sport sociologic al literature addressing the subject of the African American athletic experience. As indicated by Gates (p. 78) much of the current focus involving African American athletes has been generated in response to the channeling and overrepresentation of young black youth into collegiate revenue producing sports, unrealistic dreams of playing at an elite level, and the alarmingly poor academic performance and graduation rates of high profile Division IA collegiate athletics [i.e. basketball and football]. Historically, higher education institutions have tended to view low achieving minority students as "problems" citing the student's inability to "acculturate" to the college environment as a significant factor. Tierney (p. 603-618) suggests that institutions reconsider this position and to consider their own inability to operate in a multicultural world. Explanations for poor academic performance [as compared to whites] in African American student-athletes have generally been consistent w ith the "problem" perspective, implying that these student-athletes and their significant others overemphasize sport at the cost of academic development. According to Powell (p. 73) African-American males â€Å"don’t treat academics with the same intensity as they do basketball or football.† According to Harris (In Brooks & Althouse, 47) the National Collegiate Athletic

Social Inequality Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Social Inequality - Essay Example Dan Croteau, a roman catholic, a widower and father of two daughters coming from a working class has met Cate Woolner, a Jew, a widow and mother of two sons coming from a rich aristocratic family and they decided to tie their relationship through a marriage after a long dating session. Both of them had failed marriages and hence they have taken extreme care in knowing each other well, before engage in a marriage relationship. (LEWIN) This paper analyses different perspectives of this marriage of two un-equals. Dan Croteau was a normal person coming from a working class family where as Cate Woolner was coming from an aristocratic family. The difference in wealth is a major factor which can make or break a marriage relationship. A male and female irrespective of their financial capabilities may fall in love due to infatuation. But after marriage, these financial differences often come into play. But in Croteau’s and Woolner’s case, both of them have taken extreme care in order to remove the bad influences of differences in financial capabilities in their married life. Ms Woolner has taken measures to raise the standard of living of Croteau. â€Å"Ms. Woolner gave him money to buy a new car and pay off some debts.† (LEWIN) Another difference between these two was the difference in their educational levels and earnings. In order to reduce the gap in education and also to increase the earning potential of Croteau, she agreed to pay for a $10,000 computer course that helped prepare him for his current job as a software analyst at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene. Both Croteau and Woolner were coming from different religions; Christian and Jew respectively. But both of them were able to convince their family members about the strength of

Poetry from Other Cultures Essay Example for Free

Poetry from Other Cultures Essay Poets who were born in Britain dont usually write about slavery or how important water is to them. Many poets who are not originally into a traditional English culture use English in many different ways. Night of the scorpion, Limbo and Sacrifice all seem like they are poems that have been written to represent beliefs or a way of life. They have all got rhythms and beats and some even use nursery rhymes or chants as a basis for the poem. Language is extremely important to some people especially poets. Sometimes you can see by looking at a poem that it is not written in Standard English. At the beginning of Night of The Scorpion, a child is talking about how it remembers the night when its mother was stung by a scorpion. The child mentions Ten hours of steady rain has driven him to crawl beneath a sack of rice. Here, the child is describing the scorpion and the reason for its arrival. The child points out that the scorpion parted with its poison which literally means that the scorpion has stung someone. Throughout the poem, the scorpion is described as an evil being; The flask of diabolic tail in the dark room shows this. When the mother was stung, the villagers are described as swarming flies. This may mean they were running to help the mother or running away from the scorpion. The villagers chant the name of god to the mother, chanting the name of god in some cultures, is said to bring luck or hope to the person they are chanting for. In the poem it also states that the villagers used torches and lanterns to try and find the scorpion. As the villagers moved around with the torches and lanterns, the scorpion left shadows on the mud baked walls. The villagers could not find the scorpion so they started to make a clicking noise to try and draw the scorpion towards them. In one part of the poem, it mentions that the scorpion was controlling the poison that was inside the childs mother. With every movement the scorpion made, his poison moved around the mothers blood. The villagers seem to believe that the scorpion controls the poison that is inside the mother so they think that if they capture the scorpion, the poison inside the mother will also stop moving. They state that they want to stop the scorpion on line 18, May he sit still. After line 18, a series of sentences are started with the word may. In Standard English, this word usually introduces a polite request. The villagers all sat round whilst the mother laid there. It is described that there is a look of understanding on all of the peoples faces, which shows that they are supporting the mother, hoping she will be fine. In some cultures it is believed that if you catch the scorpion that has poisoned someone, the victim will recover. This may be why the villagers were so keen to capture the creature. The poet then describes how everyone is trying to help the childs mother recover. My father, sceptic, rationalist, trying every curse and blessing, powder, mixture, herb and hybrid. He even poured a little paraffin wax upon the bitten toe and put a match to it. I watched the flame feeding on my mother this is one of the most effective quotes in this poem as its dramatic and metaphorical. Again, the poet describes how people are trying to help the childs mother by writing; I watched a holy man perform his rites to tame the poison with an incantation. The p poet gives the effect that the poison has been inside the mother for a long time by saying; After twenty hours, it lost its sting The last three lines of the poem have had a large amount of thought go into them, as its unusual to normally end a poem like this. The poem Limbo, tells the story of slavery in a rhyming, rhythmic dance. It is ambiguous and complex. There are two main narratives running in parallel; the actions of the dance and the history of a people which is being enacted. Going down under the limbo stick is likened to the slaves going down into the hold of the ship, which carries them into slavery. In Roman Catholic tradition, Limbo is a place to which the souls of people go, if they are not good enough for heaven but not bad enough for hell, between this is Limbo. It has come to mean an unpleasant place or a state of mind or body from which it is difficult to escape. The story of slavery told in the poem is very easy to follow, yet full of detail and action. The poem has a very strong beat, suggesting the dance it describes. The rest of the poem tells a story enacted in a dance. These lines are greatly rhythmic and almost every syllable is stressed, until the very last line, where the rhythm is broken, suggesting the finish of the dance and the end of the narrative. This poem is suited to a dramatic performance there is the dancing under the limbo stick and the acting out the voyage into slavery. The poem can be chanted or sung with a rhythmic beat to give the best effect. The poem refers to a drummer which may be suitable. The poem is laid out on the page in a very peculiar fashion; this is related to the poem being chant like. Parts of the poem are echoed or at least rhyming in a repetitive way to suggest that this may not be any song or dance, but one of an African like culture. From the start of the poem, it seems pessimistic, but as you read on towards the end of the poem, it gradually stats to change into an optimistic look onto what will happen. The music is saving me could mean that the songs of their cultures were what gave them hope or the fact that the drummer was beating a rhythmic beat was what got them to carry on. The first line of sacrifice is an unusual line to start with because describing a goat having a knife dragged across its neck isnt the sort of image you would want to convey for the opening sentence. The persons point of view throughout the poem seemed to switch between two characters, a young boy and a goat being sacrificed. Two spadefuls of dirt will cover me up forever I can feel its point on my throat. Many cultures bless their house or have some kind of ceremony once the house is built. Also, there are still some cultures today that sacrifice animals to their gods. We stand in a tight circle around the animal to be sacrificed this short sentence is a great example of this. It seems that the child in question seems to dislike the idea of animals being sacrificed. The heat and the smell of the blood make me dizzy. Again, there is a whole paragraph describing just how the animal in question is sacrificed. The writer of the poem has made a strange choice by putting both children and the theme of sacrificing together, as usually a poet would not normally do this. The children are fascinated by the tableau. Here, a drama convention is used. A tableau is a still image that can be used at the beginning, during or at the end of a piece of drama. Again, the idea of ceremonies are used; A white bearded man chants something holy. The cameras click. This short sentence sounds wrong when put into context with the theme of the poem. The idea of people taking pictures of an animal that has just been sacrificed is disgusting. The ending of the poem is unusual because it seems that it is from the boys point of view because it describes the house as an unnecessary killing. We are not laying the foundations of a house but another dachau. A Dachau is a Nazi concentration camp where thousands of Jews were exterminated.

Teaching Philosophy Statement :: Education Teachers Essays

Teaching Philosophy Statement Children by nature are human sponges. They absorb information on many different levels, intellectually, emotionally, physically, etc. Their lives are mapped out by experiences, what they learn, and where they learn it. School is the first opportunity for children to learn, to experience, and to see where their lives are headed. All children have the right to an education. One that focuses on their individual needs and an education that will make them learn and feel good about themselves. School should always be challenging. Children need to understand that they are responsible for who they are and who they become. They need to be taught that school is the beginning step to success. The more you learn and absorb the more power and opportunities you will have later in life. Between knowledge and self-esteem (that should be taught in schools), kids should be able to walk away from high school with the knowledge that they have developed and a head full of ideas on where to go from there. People as a society need to raise the bar on our educational standards. The teaching styles that were seen as exceptional in the 1950’s should not be seen as exceptional today. Kids need to be taught that they can reach for the stars and beyond. Everyone is special and with work can have the same opportunities as anyone else. Education is a tool that provides many aspects of learning into a nicely gift-wrapped package. Education teaches skills that help children move from grade to grade but also from childhood into adulthood with acute readiness. Education is important not only for the knowledge that is obtained, but also for the value it holds in today’s society. Jobs are not as obtainable as they once were without some form of higher education. Education is also important because it brings people together. Families are able to communicate with more ease. Nations are able to trade and help in times of need. Learning is education and the education of learning starts in the classroom. In my classroom I hope to accomplish all the textbook materials for the grade I am teaching so that my students may advance to the next grade level with ease. I also hope to accomplish new fun ways of teaching my students self-discipline and self-esteem. Teaching children at such a young age is crucial. I believe that early education teachers help to pave a student’s road through school and life.

Building a New Supply Chain

The background of the case is that a company performs garbage pickup from construction sites. Often the construction site wants them to leave a bin there or sometimes they simply pile up the garbage and the company's employees load the material into the garbage truck. Typically a truck full of garbage at the depot costs $200 per truck to empty. The company charges $350 per load, so there is little profit especially when taking overhead into account (labor and the cost of the truck). The owner wonders how other companies seem to be making so much money. One day he owner finds a lot of old refrigerators and metal fencing at one of the pickup locations. He has heard that there are some companies that pick this up for free and resell the material to companies looking for scrap metal. Being entrepreneurial and worried about his business, he investigates. He finds that he is able to make an additional $200 per shipment of scrap metal, making his new profit $550 per load!He gets excited and starts to think about what other opportunities may be out there with similar reverse supply chains. Some additional problems that this company have are elated to what its profit really is for each of its transactions, what challenges this company would have to look at alternative materials and markets and what the current competition is for his company's type of business and lastly what approaches this company should take to ensure it was successful.Cause – The main cause behind many of these questions the company is asking itself and problems that it is currently having with profitability lay in the appearance that the company has not built itself a good business plan for any step of the company. A business plan helps outline what you need to start a business, but it also helps you prepare for your future and any issues along the way. Your business plan should clarify why you exist, who your customers are, what products or services you provide, how you plan to create and del iver your products or services, and where your business is going. It looks like the owner has started the company with only a small idea of what is possible within their industry scope and has not thought through all the steps that they should take on in order to be a marketable, profitable and long lasting company. Little thought has gone into who the customers are, what equipment is required, what process would be the most profitable and how to market themselves to the correct customer base. The whole business is based on a reverse logistics model and inserting themselves into this construction supply chain as the provider of reverse logistics systems to their construction customers. It is astounding to see that the owner has not fully considered how to best provide benefit to their clients and maximize their profitability through these services. To hear that the owner has heard that some companies† pick up materials for free and resell them clearly shows that the company has not identified the biggest opportunity for profitability in this type of business. Stating that their new profit could also be $550 per load is also strange in that there appears to be very little understanding of accounting related to determining profitability and cost of overheads.Based on the example provided, any revenues would have expenses of the cost of the truck (including initial purchase, fuel and any maintenance), the cost of the person driving the truck, the cost of the arson piling the garbage into the truck (if this service is required) and the cost paid at the depot for disposal. There can be further costs related to equipment or training required for their people to be on a construction site including Personnel Protective Equipment and any certifications required to handle waste. Many of these elements would be considered if the company took the time to consider what the actual business plan for the company is and whether this would lead to a profitable organization. Analysis – When looking at the market space that this company is attempting to play in, the following information shows that there indeed is a market for these services. Within the industry there is a name for the materials that are left over at a construction, renovation of demolition site. These items are called construction & demolition materials (C&D).The most common materials are concrete, wood, drywall, asphalt shingles, asphalt pavement, metal and cardboard. These materials typically make up 70 to 95 percent of the discarded material at a residential or commercial site. In the past these items were often discarded but are actually liable commodities that can be recycled into new products or used in many new ways. When perceived as waste, disposal of C&D materials is often viewed as simply part of the cost of doing business, and recycling and reusing these materials are sometimes overlooked as management options.Recycling can benefit a construction business's bottom lin e, it benefits the environment and a construction company's recycle policy can be a contributing factor to them being awarded a project. Concrete can be recycled into many markets that currently use crushed stone. Because concrete is commonly recycled, numerous concrete recycling facilities exist across the country. Asphalt pavement is heavily recycled currently and is commonly crushed and recycled back into asphalt, either in-place or at a hot-mix asphalt plant.Asphalt shingles can also be ground and recycled into hot-mix asphalt. Clean, untreated wood can be re-milled into lumber or chipped or ground and used to make engineered board, boiler fuel and mulch. Common metals found at a construction, demolition or renovation site include steel, aluminum, and copper. Construction sites frequently generate large amounts of cardboard waste when new appliances and materials are delivered to the site in cardboard boxes. Markets are well-established for metals and cardboard.Local metal scrap yards or recyclers that accept these materials are likely easily accessible. Gypsum in drywall can be removed and recycled into many markets that commonly use gypsum, including new drywall manufacture, cement manufacture and agriculture. All of these items should be materials the owner should investigate as to whether the local construction sites are enervating these materials and whether there are local resources available to buy and recycle these materials from construction companies or the pickup company.Another factor to review is whether recyclers accept mixed loads of materials, or if it is more profitable to separate the materials, which can be done onsite by placing the materials in separate boxes or piles. When developing a business plan, an important first step is to look for the local resources currently available. Contact local and provincial waste regulators and learn what is and is not permissible to recycle. Many rabbinical or local officials have lists of local recy clers and their locations that they can share with you. These local recyclers should be contacted to determine what they take and what these conditions of payment are. They may also be able to share guidance for best recycling practices in your area. It is also possible to research local waste haulers through this method to better determine the level of competition there is for the types of garbage pickup services that they provide. One key factor within the market space for recycling materials is the importance of these recycling orgasm to today's construction environment. There is increased interest in constructing green buildings and this has generated more interest in recycling C materials. Providing knowledge of how to recycle C materials can make a company a vital asset to a green building project. The most common method of green building certification in North America is through the Green Building Council. The Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LED) certif ication process requires that the building attain points for various green attributes, including energy savings, trials usage, indoor environmental quality and efficient water usage.Certification is granted during the construction phase. Points are given for reusing materials, using materials with recycled content and recycling the waste that is produced at the construction site. Different levels of certification can be attained depending on the number of points the building gains. Even if LED certification is not the goal of the building owner, committing to recycling a certain percentage of the materials generated at a Jobless can be a great marketing tool and can give a construction company an edge over its competition.Since green building certification grants points based on recycled amounts, implementing a tracking system will aid companies in attaining LED points for recycling. Some contractors have their waste haulers report the amount of material that is currently disposed a nd recycled from their construction sites. That way, contractors can evaluate how they can increase the amount of material that is recycled from each site.Another example of how a company can differentiate themselves in this space is by providing services that eliminate the need for transporting and disposing of materials by recycling onsite. For example, waste concrete can be ground and used as fill, and clean wood, drywall, and cardboard can be ground and used onsite as a soil amendment. New, smaller, portable grinders can be relatively inexpensive and safe to use at Jobless. Some of these machines can be hitched to pickup trucks, while others are attachments for excavators. Some challenges when looking at all of these options are related to having the appropriate equipment for providing the potential services demanded by the customer base. There can be significant overhead costs attached to these equipment purchases. Availability and cost of labor will also be a key factor in deci sions. If the appropriate research is not done up front, including discussions with the potential customer base, investments can be made in equipment and people that does not drive the revenue to cover the costs. Before Jumping into a specific market area or activity, the owner must ensure that the demand is there. Solution – The owner of this garbage pickup company needs to wake up and do his research with a goal to developing a complete business plan. Currently the owner is thinking of only kicking up garbage from construction sites and disposing them, which does indeed save the construction company these reverse logistics efforts, but clearly misses out on the big picture of what is possible in this service space. The customer base which is construction companies, are being driven very heavily toward recycling their materials for various reasons. They can reduce their hauling and disposal costs by keeping valuable C&D materials out of landfills. The substitution of recycled C&D materials in place of virgin materials in new products and processes results in substantial energy savings and greenhouse gas reduction. Recycling C&D materials equates to green building points. As green building becomes increasingly popular, proven knowledge about the benefits of green building-?and green building practices-?is likely to boost construction business, since many customers are now looking for this service. Using recycled materials in new structures and recycling C&D materials produced during construction can help you achieve the LED certification that construction company customers want. All of this leads to a very strong potential market for the services that a garbage pickup company can provide. The company can offer sorting of the products on the site, the company could offer onsite recycling, the company can ensure that they track the materials so that their customers can obtain the maximum lead points and market themselves as a green construction company. The p ickup company can also very finely determine what their charge should be to the construction company based on their knowledge of what the recycling company will pay for materials. This can allow them to maximize profit while remaining at an appropriate marketable cost to the construction companies. They could provide flexible, scalable services at the appropriate cost. The owner needs to talk to the customer base and find the niches that will allow them to compete. Work through the business plan, identify what they can afford to invest in, develop the relationships with customers and clients, market themselves appropriately and then work the plan. There is little question that reverse logistics is a growing concern in the construction industry when it comes to C&D materials. The market is there for garbage pickup companies who can show the greatest value.
